If Your Brand Voice Were a Person, Would Anyone Want to Sit Next to Them at Dinner?
Your brand voice sets the tone before your design ever does. If your copy makes people cringe, it’s not your offer, it’s your personality. Let’s make sure people actually want to sit next to it.
Let’s set the scene.
You’re at a dinner party. Good food, better wine, easy conversation, until a new guest plops down beside you.
Within thirty seconds, you know exactly who they are. The “let me tell you about my hustle” type. The over sharer. The human PowerPoint.
Now imagine that person is your brand voice.
Yeah. Suddenly that wine doesn’t taste so good.
Because whether it’s your social posts, emails, or web copy, your voice is how people decide if they want to stay for dessert or fake a bathroom emergency.
Most brands? Total buzzkills.
Let’s be real. Most brands fall into one of these painfully familiar types:
The Try-Hard Hipster — Still using “fam” and “vibes” like it’s 2018.
The Corporate Robot — Every sentence ends in jargon. Probably wears khakis.
The Over-sharer — Mistakes “authenticity” for trauma dumping.
The Forgettable One — Says absolutely nothing, but says it very politely.
If your brand sounds like any of these, no one’s sliding into your DMs… or your checkout page.
The Dinner Guest Test.
A strong brand voice feels like the guest everyone wants to sit next to. Confident, but not cocky. Funny, but not forced. Knows when to drop a one-liner and when to listen.
Here’s your gut check:
Would you text them back?
If your copy sounds like a motivational LinkedIn post, the answer is no.Do they ask questions or just talk about themselves?
Your brand should start conversations, not dominate them.Do they stand for something?
If your brand avoids opinions like small talk at the salad course, we have a problem.Do they know when to stop talking?
A good brand leaves room for the audience. A bad one won’t shut up.
How to be the guest everyone remembers (for the right reasons).
Stop borrowing someone else’s voice.
You can’t “vibe match” your way to authenticity. Your competitor’s intern doesn’t get to define your personality.Use normal human words.
If you wouldn’t say it out loud, don’t write it. Nobody talks about “empowered synergy ecosystems.”Pick three words and own them.
Decide how your brand should feel and stay loyal to it. Mine? Bold. Smart. Slightly inappropriate.Make people feel something.
If your message doesn’t spark curiosity, confidence, or a good laugh, it’s not working.
Here’s the thing.
Your brand voice is the energy people feel when they’re sitting next to you… online or off.
So ask yourself: are you the person everyone leans toward when you speak, or the one they pray gets a call from their Uber?
If your audience wouldn’t want to sit next to your brand at dinner, they definitely won’t want to buy from it.
